Wabang Jamir was appointed to the Indian Police Service in the 1999 batch and allotted the Gujarat cadre. He joined the service on 10 January 2000, entering as a direct recruit through the Union Public Service Commission’s Civil Services Examination.
He came to policing from engineering. His qualifying degree is a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication — a discipline built on signals, networks and the disciplined interpretation of information. It is not an incidental detail. Much of his subsequent service has sat close to the systems through which a modern police organisation gathers, verifies and acts on what it knows.
His home state is Nagaland, and a substantial part of his early and mid-career service was spent there on inter-cadre deputation, including as Inspector General of Police (Range). He returned to the Gujarat cadre and moved into the state’s intelligence establishment, serving as Inspector General of Police (Intelligence – 1) at the State CID (IB) headquarters in Gandhinagar.
Since 2023 his work has been anchored in Surat City — first as Joint Commissioner of Police, then, on promotion to the Additional Director General of Police grade, as Special Commissioner of Police, Sector I. In July 2026 he was given charge of the Surat City Police Commissionerate as in-charge Police Commissioner.

On 3 July 2026, following the transfer of the incumbent Commissioner to Ahmedabad, Wabang Jamir was given charge of the Surat City Police Commissionerate as in-charge Police Commissioner.
The appointment is an in-charge arrangement rather than a substantive posting: contemporary reporting records that he is to hold the charge until further orders are issued. Earlier in the same year — in the state-wide transfer order of 6 March 2026 — he had been moved out of his post as Special Commissioner of Police, Sector I, Surat City and placed on waiting for posting.

Police Medal for
Meritorious Service
Independence Day · 15 August 2021
On the occasion of Independence Day 2021, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced police medals for 1,380 personnel across the country. Among them, Wabang Jamir, IPS — then serving as Inspector General of Police (Intelligence – 1), Gandhinagar, Gujarat — was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
The medal is a service decoration conferred in the name of the President of India and announced twice a year, on Republic Day and Independence Day. It recognises a sustained record of resourceful and devoted service rather than a single act.
