The record

Recorded in the
Independence Day
list, 2021

In the medals announcement made by the Ministry of Home Affairs for Independence Day 2021, Wabang Jamir, IPS was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

He is recorded in that list against his then-designation: IGP (Intelligence – 1), Gandhinagar, Gujarat — the intelligence appointment he held at the Gujarat State CID (IB).

The published list records the award and the recipient’s designation. It does not publish an individual citation for service medals of this class, and no citation, reason or accompanying account has been invented for this page.

Context

Where this medal sits

Indian police decorations are announced twice each year — on Republic Day and on Independence Day.

Class 01

Gallantry medals

The President’s Police Medal for Gallantry and the Police Medal for Gallantry recognise conspicuous acts of courage — a specific act, in a specific incident.

Class 02

Service medals

The President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service recognise a sustained record of resourceful and devoted service over a career, rather than a single act.

The Police Medal for Meritorious Service — the award made to Wabang Jamir in 2021 — belongs to the second class. It is a service decoration, conferred in the name of the President of India, recognising a record of meritorious service maintained over time.

It is a distinct award from the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, which is conferred separately and in smaller numbers. The two are sometimes conflated in general reporting. This site follows the Ministry of Home Affairs list, which records the 2021 award to Wabang Jamir under the Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

The 2021 announcement

1,380 police
personnel, in

Reading it well

Service
recognised

A service medal is a statement about duration and consistency rather than about any single moment. It records that an officer’s work was judged, by their own service and by the government, to have been sustained at a standard worth marking.

That is a modest claim, and it is the correct one to make. It says nothing about particular operations, and it is not evidence of any specific outcome. What it does establish is institutional recognition, formally recorded, at a defined point in a career — in this case in 2021, while serving in the Gujarat state intelligence establishment.

No other award, medal, honour, commendation or recognition is claimed anywhere on this website. Where the public record shows one decoration, this site records one.
